4 killed in Palhalan firing by police, forces

SRINAGAR, Sep 6: After the relative peace for a week four persons including a 16-year old were killed and two dozen injured with bullet injuries after police and CRPF opened fire on protectors in Palhallan area of Baramulla district of North Kashmir, thus raising the death toll of civilian killings 69. Three among the injured are stated to be critical.
Thousands of people late tonight took control of Srinagar-Muzaffarbad road as a mark of protest against the killings and decided to observe Shab-e-Qader there.
Police claims that the Inspector General cavalcade was attacked by the protestors and they tried to disperse them in which some people were injured. However, locals term the opening of fire by police and CRPF unprovoked.  
Reports said a group of protestors had staged a peaceful protest demonstration at Palhallan on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road Monday afternoon. They were shouting pro-freedom slogans and were demanding an end to unabated civilian killings and atrocities committed by state and non-state forces. A convoy of SOG and CRPF troopers passed through Palhallan however, they were stopped by the protestors. With the mild cane charging the CRPF and SOG they were dispersed.
Locals said after half an hour the SOG and CRPF troopers came back and entered into the Batpora of Palhallan and opened fire on the people who were returning from a mosque after the afternoon prayers. Seven persons were injured and one among them Feroz Ahmad, 16, a student was critically and was removed to SDH Pattan where he was declared brought dead.  
As the news of death of Feroz spread, thousands of people of Palhallan, Pattan, Wasun and adjoining areas took to streets and held strong protests demonstrations against the killing of Feroz. Shouting pro-freedom slogans the protestors were demanding the arrest of police and CRPF troopers involved into the killing of Feroz.
A large number of mourners took the body of Feroz in a procession and were marching towards the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway. A heavy contingent of police and CRPF intercepted them on highway and opened indiscriminate fire on them. A youth identified as Noor-u-Din Tantray was critically injured and was removed to SKIMS Soura, where the doctors declared him dead.
“He was brought dead,” said medical superintendent SKIMS Dr Amin Tabish. He said that he had received a number of bullets in both the legs. Dr Tabish added another youth identified as Ali Muhammad is critical. “We are trying to save his life, however, he is critical and bullets have hit his neck,” he said.
Amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans Noor-u-din Tantray and Feroz Ahmad were laid to rest late Monday evening in Eidgah grave yard of Palhallan. Reports said hundreds of people of Wasun and its adjoining shouting pro-freedom slogans were coming to participate in the Nimaz Jinazah of Feroz Ahmad and Noor-u-din Tantray at Palhallan.
The procession was intercepted by police and CRPF at Khoyee, half a kilometer from Palhallan. The men in uniform opened fire on the procession and a dozen people were injured. Muhammad Sultan Mir, 45 died on spot, while as another injured identified as Mudasir Ahmad 22, succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital.  
The other injured have been admitted in JVC hospital Bemina and Pattan hospital and it is stated that two among the admitted in JVC are critical. The bullets have hit the heads of the injured.
Reports of massive protests in Pattan and its adjoining were coming when this report was being filed. Reports added that the people have left the villages and kept the bodies on Srinagar- Muzaffarabad road.
Police media cell has issued a statement Sunday evening I n which they have claimed that the situation in the valley remained largely peaceful shops had opened and traffic plied on the roads. There was no curfew restriction imposed anywhere.
The statement added that, however, in view of the persistent problem at Palhalan Police parties were deputed for smooth movement of the traffic on National Highway. “At 1430 hours this (Monday) afternoon large groups of stone pelting mobs attacked the traffic, security force and police vehicles at Palhalan, Pattan, and Singhpora in Baramulla district. On return from the spot IGP Kashmir and his entourage, accompanied by senior police officers came under heavy stone pelting at Palhalan,” the statement said adding to prevent mobs from merging into the police party the accompanied force chased the mobs so as to disperse them off. “In dispersal some persons were injured, three of them later on passed away. This spot has been witnessing frequent stone pelting by frenzy mobs. Police, security force and civilian vehicles are being targeted at this place. Many civilians including the passengers of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus were injured in a number of stone pelting incidents.
The Pampore area of South Kashmir is witnessing a high tension after Rashtriya Rifles troopers beat the people Sunday evening. Reports said groups of youth Sunday evening pelted stones on the TATA Sumo vehicles carrying some residents for an iftaar party organized by the army. Reports added that three TATA Sumo vehicles were damaged and somehow the some of residents managed to reach the army camp. They attended the iftaar party and were dropped at their homes in army Casper vehicles. The army beat the many a residents and pedestrians. The people held protests against the beating till late in the evening.
As the news of beating spread Monday morning the people held strong peaceful protests demonstrations and observed a complete strike.
Police and CRPF burst tear smoke shells and cane charged the residents of Dhoobi Mohalla Batmaloo Monday morning. They were staging protest demonstrations against the beating of son of local Imam by CRPF. Shouting anti-Indian and pro-freedom slogans the protestors were trying to march towards Bypass roads and police and CRPF burst tear some shells leaving at least a dozen of people injured.
Local news agency KMN reported that as the situation started to move out of control, a meet between some residents of Batmaloo and senior police officers was held. The people demanded removal of bunker from Dhoobi Mohalla Batmaloo and senior police officers assured that it will be removed with in 15 days. Later the protesters pacified.
Incidents of stone pelting and clashes were also received from Bohrikdal, Nowhatta and some other pockets of old city.
